How to Find Sources for a Paper You've Already Written
Wrote the paper first and worried about citations later? Here's a practical, sentence-by-sentence method for finding real academic sources to back up a draft you've already finished.

Most advice about research assumes you read first and write second. Real writing rarely works that way. You have an idea, you get momentum, you draft three pages in one sitting — and then you look back at a document full of confident statements with nothing behind them. If you're staring at a finished draft wondering where the citations are supposed to come from, you're not doing it wrong. You're just doing the second half now.
Start by marking what actually needs a citation
Not every sentence needs a source. Before you search for anything, read through your draft and highlight only the sentences that make a factual, empirical, or contested claim — the ones a skeptical reader could reasonably respond to with "says who?"
Three categories usually need support:
- Empirical claims. Numbers, rates, trends, effects. "Remote workers report higher job satisfaction."
- Attributed ideas. Any concept, framework, or argument that came from someone else, even loosely.
- Contested statements. Anything a reader in your field might dispute.
Your own analysis, transitions, and interpretive arguments don't need citations. Being honest about this distinction usually cuts the list in half and makes the task feel finite.
Turn each claim into a searchable question
The most common reason source-hunting fails is that people paste their sentence into a search bar exactly as written. Academic databases don't index prose — they index terminology.
Take this claim: "Students who take handwritten notes remember lectures better than students who type."
Search engines respond much better to the underlying variables: handwriting versus typing note-taking plus lecture recall or encoding. Strip the rhetoric, keep the concepts, and think about what a researcher would have called the thing you're describing. If you don't know the field's vocabulary yet, find one relevant paper and mine its abstract for the terms it uses — then search again with those.
Work backward from a review article
If a claim is broad, don't hunt for the one perfect study. Find a recent review article or meta-analysis in the area and read its reference list. Reviews exist precisely to summarize what a field believes, which means someone has already done the aggregation work for you. One good review can supply five or six citations for different paragraphs of your draft.
This also protects you from a subtler problem: citing an outlier study that the field has since qualified or failed to replicate.
Trace claims to their original source
Watch out for statements you absorbed from a blog post, a lecture, or a textbook. These are often paraphrases of paraphrases. When you find a secondary source that mentions your claim, follow its citation to the original paper and check whether it actually says what everyone believes it says. Citation drift is real, and reviewers notice it.
Be careful asking a chatbot for references
General-purpose AI models are genuinely good at helping you rephrase a claim into searchable terminology or explain what a field's key debates are. They are much less reliable at producing citations. Language models generate text that looks like a reference — plausible authors, a real-sounding journal, a well-formed DOI — without any guarantee that the paper exists. If you use a chatbot at this stage, treat everything it gives you as a lead to verify, never as a citation to paste.
Check that the source supports your specific sentence
The last step is the one people skip. Open the paper and confirm that it supports your claim, not a neighboring one. A study showing an effect in undergraduates doesn't automatically support a statement about professionals. A correlation doesn't support a causal sentence. If the fit isn't clean, either soften your sentence or keep looking — adjusting the claim is often the more honest move.
Retrofitting citations onto a finished draft is tedious mostly because it's manual: read the sentence, guess the terminology, search, skim, repeat.
